What does the course cover?

Delivered online over 3, 3 hour sessions, this course will: 

  • Session 1: Be introduced to the Adobe Illustrator interface and learn the craft of orthographic drawings for stone shapes and infuse them with captivating colours.
  • Session 2: Understand how to control the Pen tool, one of Illustrator’s most important features. Use it to modify existing shapes, working with layers and the stacking order to create stunning visual compositions.
  •  Session 3: Upgrade your workflow by learning techniques such as importing images for tracing, using transformation tools and building your very own object library. Cap it off with a multi-way drawing of a ring and learn the ins and outs of exporting for future use.

Our class sizes are balanced to offer you the chance to get group tuition as well as individual attention from your tutor. While the course follows a clear and defined structure, there is embedded support to help participants when they are ready to approach their own individual projects. Ultimately, the goal of the course is to grant you the confidence to apply this innovative tool for original creations and problem solving in your manufacturing production.

What equipment do I need to have for this course:

As this course will be delivered online, you will need to have the following tools and materials for the first lesson. If you are unsure, please email professional.training@goldsmiths-centre.org

  • A computer (PC or Mac) with a web camera and mic so you can show your work to the tutor to get feedback and guidance on your progress.
  •  A mouse.
  •  Adobe illustrator CC installed on your own computer.
  • A stable internet connection.

What is the format of the seminar and what do I need to join?

This course will be run online on Zoom (UK time).

  • You will receive a link to join the course in your email confirmation, along with a download link for essential notes and tutorial files. A reminder email containing this link will also be sent 6 days before the event starts.
  • You will be interacting with the tutor live during the session, being able to ask questions as you work through the exercises together with the tutor.
  • Participants will also be able to send images/scans of their homework for support and feedback in between sessions via email or whatsapp.
  • These sessions will be recorded and stored in a Vimeo showcase accessible by private link and password. Videos will be available for up to 6 months after the course ends.

Who is this course designed for?

Beginner: No practical experience or understanding of the listed skills required.

Intermediate: Some practical experience and basic understanding of the listed skill required.

In order to benefit most from this course, participants should have some experience in jewellery design and some ideas they would like to experiment with.

A second more in depth part to this course will be offered soon, watch this space!

Jack Meyer has been providing jewellery CAD training in London's jewellery district Hatton Garden since 2006. Over 1000+ students have passed through his classes over the years. His combined background in computer graphics programming as well as jewellery manufacturing is unusual among jewellery CAD instructors. He is also one of the few jewellery CAD instructors in the world who is certified to provide training in all major jewellery CAD software packages. When not writing or delivering courses, he runs a bespoke jewellery design business and moderates CADJewellerySkills.com, where he uses his combined knowledge of all types of jewellery CAD to provide advisory to those keen on starting out in jewellery CAD.
