Discover how to create larger, lightweight forms that are comfortable and elegant to wear in our Bombé Ring short course led by acclaimed jeweller, Bibi Cheung. Bombé rings are beautiful statement pieces, distinguished by their graceful curves and the refined simplicity of their lines, adding a distinctive flair to your jewellery making skills set.
Under the expert tutelage of designer-maker Bibi Cheung, you will explore traditional construction and forming techniques, all while you refining your soldering and hammering skills. Over four comprehensive days, you will immerse yourself in traditional bench work and create a three-dimensional hollow ring using silver sheet, developing essential skills that will take your craftsmanship to new levels.
Whether you are expanding upon existing skills or embarking on a journey to acquire new ones, this short course promises to stretch metallurgy and forming principles to your advantage.
By the end of the course, you will have created your own silver bombé ring with finger guard and time permitting a set centre stone.
How will this course help my practice?
● Precision measuring skills: Save money and ensure each piece fits seamlessly together from the initial template to the final assembly.
● Crafting elegance and illusion: Learn to transform ordinary sheet metal into three dimensional shapes, breathing volume into your designs.
● Make it shine: Add a touch of sophistication by adding a centre stone to your creation and perhaps accompanied by a decorated finger guard to make it stand out.
● Add a string to your bow: use your existing skills and tools in a different way to bring texture and polish to your work.
Our small class size offers you the chance to explore traditional bench skills with a leading contemporary master offering group guidance and 1:1 time with your tutor to deepen your knowledge and understanding of forming and soldering skills.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring your own basic tool kit including (but not limited to):
● Set of needle files, essentially a ‘well-defined’ square file.
● Set of pliers including parallel, flat, nose, and half-round.
● Half-round hand file with handle.
● Emery Stick. P600. Elastic Band.
● Small ‘well-defined’ steel rule and a sharp scriber.
● Piercing frame and blades (2/0 or 3/0).
● Solder probe or tweezers.
● Small paint brush for borax application.
● Tin snips and ring clamp.
● AA tweezers and a pair of diamond tongs
● Loupe.
● Pair of dividers.
● Protective clothing or clothing you do not mind getting dirty e.g. apron, and closed-toe shoes.
Optional:
● Spectacles or head visor (if required) to work on small details.
● Notebook and pen.
What will I be provided with?
● All precious metal (silver) needed to make your ring.
● All consumable and equipment necessary to make the ring.
● Solder as required.
● Some semi-precious stones to choose from.
Who is this course designed for?
- Beginner: No practical experience or understanding of the listed skills required.
- Intermediate: Some practical experience and basic understanding of the listed skill required.
To benefit most from this course, participants should have experience of being in a workshop environment and able to work independently on basic tasks such as piercing, filing and soldering.

Who is the tutor?
Bibi Cheung (MA, FIPG) is a designer, goldsmith, sculptor, engraver and setter. She believes in finding the balance between artistic and practical skills for the people she works with. Bibi studied Visual Culture in Jewellery and Applied Art at the City of London Polytechnic (Sir John Cass) and then completed a Master's Degree, in the same subject, at London Guildhall University (Sir John Cass). During her practice, she has won numerous awards from organisations and companies, including De Beers, The Goldsmiths Company, The British Jewellery Association, and David Morris. In 2022, she became a Fellow member at The Institute of Professional Goldsmiths (IPG). Bibi and her daughter, Katerina, currently run their jewellery brand TVRRINI. Bibi has an unwavering passion for education and teaches actively to share her knowledge with others.
